What is PRP?

When human blood is poured into a test tube, it becomes coagulated slowly and is divided into two separate columns. The lower red column contains red blood cells while upper yellow column contains white blood cells and platelets. Platelets are active and cellular components without a nucleus that their main task is to stop the bleeding. In addition, they contain many growth factors . The impact of these factors on soft tissue and bone repair and recovery has been already proved. Platelet-rich plasma (Abbreviation: PRP) is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. Normal platelet count in the blood flow is between 150 to 400 thousand per microliter. In PRP method, platelet concentration is raised to about 5 times more than its usual amount for therapeutic purposes.

 

PRP preparation and injection method:

First, the anticoagulant substance is added patient's blood in order prevent clotting. Then red blood cells and a platelet-free plasma is separated by using centrifuges and the centrifugal force. Some substances are added to the PRP that activate platelet a few minutes before the injection . These substances cause the release of growth factors. The mixture is injected into the desired location immediately. There is a low and tolerable pain due to local anesthetic skin creams on the injection zone using a syringe with a fine needle.
